Mark Robert Hanson, 57, from Gearhart, was arrested June 16 at 6:10 p.m., on U.S. Highway 101 in Seaside after police stopped his 1997 Dodge Ram after observing the driving violating a traffic rule. Hanson was found to have a warrant dating back to 2014 from the Clatsop Sheriff’s Office. He was arrested on scene and transported to the county jail. His vehicle was secured at the traffic stop.
Troopers were alerted June 16 at 7:57 p.m. of a person brandishing a firearm during an argument between two motorists on U.S. Highway 26 near milepost 20. All parties were interviewed by police. Accused of brandishing the firearm was a 41-year-old Seaside man. No probable cause was established.
A two-car crash on U.S. Highway 101 near milepost 35 occurred June 20 at 12:39 p.m., when one car rear-ended another as the car in front attempted to make a left turn. The second car slammed on its brakes but couldn’t stop. A witness said it was following too closely. Both occupants of the second car, a couple in their 70s from Portland, were transported to the hospital by ambulance. The rear-ended car was towed by Gary’s Towing.
A 23-year-old Chinook, Washington, man was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated — controlled substance on June 20 at 3:41 p.m., on U.S. Highway 101 near milepost 21. While on patrol, officer saw a car in violation of traffic rules; the driver was pulled over and observed to be impaired. He failed several field sobriety tests and was transported to Seaside police headquarters for processing. He was also taken to the Astoria police station for further evaluation; the test revealed he had a .00% blood alcohol content. Alex J. Heckes was issued a criminal citation and released from the Astoria police department.
A road rage incident involving a gun was reported June 20 at 5:48 p.m. on U.S. Highway 26 on Highway 26 near milepost 12. Both parties got to Seaside before they could be located. Troopers interviewed both parties in separate locations; one man, John Meiners, 43, from Warrenton, was cited for menacing with a firearm and released.
Levi Dennis Broom, 37, of Seaside, was arrested on a warrant June 21 at 7:13 on U.S. Highway 101 at milepost 23 after troopers witnessed him commit a traffic violation. A traffic stop was conducted; the warrant came up during a records check. Broom was arrested and transported to the Clatsop County jail for lodging.
A 74-year-old Gearhart man reported his windshield was broken when a rock flew up from under the wheels of a logging truck traveling westbound on U.S. Highway 26 near milepost 18 June 24 at 10:03 a.m. The Gearhart man was traveling eastbound. He turned around and followed the log truck until a trooper stopped it on U.S. Highway 101 near milepost 17. Police facilitated in an information exchange between the Gearhart man and the 69-year-old Nehalem truck driver.
State police responded to a report of a hit-and-run crash June 25 at 5:57 p.m., on U.S. Highway 26 at milepost 4. A preliminary investigation showed a white Kia traveling eastbound crossed the centerline and sideswiped westbound a silver Toyota. Damage was caused. The Kia driver fled the scene and later abandoned the car on Highway 26. He was reported as a suspicious person walking along Highway 101 at Hwy 26. Troopers located him and determined he was the driver at the crash. Samuel Tad Benson, 27, was arrested for reckless driving, reckless endangering another person, and leaving the scene of an accident with property damage. He was taken to the Clatsop County Jail.
Two rear-end crashes happened on U.S. Highway 26 near milepost 7 June 26 at 5:34 p.m. Police say they were two separate incidents involving four cars. There were two troopers on scene. Nobody needed tow and nobody was injured.
A single-car crash happened at 3:57 p.m., June 27 on U.S. Highway 101 at the U.S. Highway 26 junction. The driver, a 26-year-old man from Corvallis, said he was distracted as he went into a tight corner and drove his Jeep Renegade off the roadway. He hit an ODOT sign. He was issued a citation and drove with his passengers, two 28-year-olds, one from Corvallis, the other from New York City, from the scene.
Police responded to a multi-car crash June 29 at 6:31 on U.S. Highway 101 and Ensign Avenue, caused, police say, when the driver of a Toyota Rav 4 failed to stop at the light and collided with another Toyota, a Mazda, and a Hyundai. A fifth car was struck by the Hyundai as it was forced backwards from the collision. Several occupants were transported to hospital by medical personnel for injuries and three cars were towed from the scene. Two cars were able to be driven away. The driver of the Rav 4, Hailey Marie Gruetter, 20, from Portland, was issued a criminal citation and released for reckless driving.
Troopers responded to U.S. Highway 101 by Beerman Creek Lane July 4 at 3:59 p.m. for a report of a three-car collision. Investigation showed traffic was moving very slowly when one driver came up from behind, rear-ending another driver. That vehicle moved forward and struck another vehicle. Two people were transported to Columbia Memorial Hospital for injuries. Gary’s Tow removed two of the cars. The third was drivable. None of the drivers or passengers were local.
A man and a woman were reported physically fighting in a car July 5 at Hug Point in Cannon Beach. On arrival, there were no signs of injury but the man had a release agreement prohibiting him from having contact with the woman. The release agreement also prohibited him from using alcohol or marijuana, both of which had occurred. Ernesto Cruz, 38 from Hillsboro, was taken into custody to be lodged at the Clatsop County jail.
A 32-year-old man and his motor home were not injured following an accident July 7 at 3:22 p.m., on Indian Beach Road. Police say the 1995 Sowi motorhome was traveling northbound on Ecola State Park Road/Indian Beach Road when it moved to the shoulder for an oncoming vehicle. The motorhome drove off the road and down a steep embankment. The home was not damaged and the driver wasn’t hurt. Burdon’s Towing arrived to make plans to remove the motorhome. Park rangers were notified.
State police stopped a blue Ford truck on U.S. Highway 26 near milepost 13 July 8 at 9:12 p.m., for speeding; on investigation it came to light the driver, Cody Joseph Ostermeier, 31 from Seaside, was wanted on a warrant for a parole violation. He was cited for speeding, driving with a suspension and failure to show proof of insurance. He was transported to and lodged at the county jail.
Police responded July 8 at 9:14 p.m., to a report of menacing on U.S. Highway 26 near milepost 1.5. An on-going family dispute they say led to a road rage incident and alleged menacing with a BB gun between two family members. All witnesses to the incident are related. A four-year-old passenger was in the car. Involved is a 34-year-old Seaside man. The case is being referred for potential criminal charges.
On July 10 at 12:40 p.m., state police responded to a report of a three-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 101 at milepost 24. Minor injuries were reported. Police say all vehicles were traveling northbound when a Chevy Volt collided with a Chevy S-10 causing the S-1- to collide with a Ford F-360. Two vehicles were able to be driven from the scene. The driver and passenger of one of the vehicles chose to drive themselves to the hospital and were discharged with minor injuries. Another vehicle was towed to the tow yard by Gary’s Towing. One driver was cited for following too closely.
